"You are SOOOO lucky!!!"
My brother, Brian, said this to me one year when my birthday fell on Super Bowl Sunday.
I didn't feel lucky. I didn't want to spend the entire day watching football, which is what we would most certainly be doing. (Well, besides going to church). He, on the other hand, thought there were few things greater than a both a birthday and the Super Bowl on the same day.
I've watched few, if any, Super Bowls since leaving home. Yesterday, I guessed (correctly) that the Steelers were playing this year. After all, it seems like I've seem them in the news and mentions of them on my yahoo home page. I was told the Arizona Cardinals would be the opposing team. Funny. I'd never heard of them. Wait a minute. Aren't the Cardinals in St. Louis? I looked them up on Wikipedia. Apparently, I've not watched football since 1987.
I have had birthdays, though. Some on Super Bowl Sunday, some not. This year, my birthday was on Monday. On Monday, the ALA announced the children and young adult literary awards for 2009: The Newbery Award, the Caldecott Medal, The Printz Award. The Super Bowl of Children's Writing. Combine that and the fact I finally got flowers on my birthday:
Well, I am so lucky.

You did have a fabulous birthday this year! All I get to do occasionally is what 4 hours of conference on my birthday (October 3). Ugh! I should be grateful, I guess.
And, by the way, I'm with you on the St. Louis Cardinals thing.
You obviously looked on the bright side. Congratulations.
Birthdays are never what they should be. First of all, they should start with a phone call from your Mom. That isn't going to happen. Then there should be a quiet, relaxed breakfast, made by someone else. That's not going to happen. Then there should be the anticipation of gifts or, in your case, flowers. All day long, there should be lovely anticipation. Then the back door should burst open, bringing a flurry of snow and the kids and husband, filled with good cheer and those anticipated goodies AND dinner. And then, there should be the two of your, snuggled by the fire, with hot chocolate and lots of time to talk.
We take what we get which, sometimes is less than nothing. Remind me to tell you of my most memorable Mother's Day. It will make your birthday sound like a fabulous fairy tale. Humbug.
Happy Birthday! Whatever day that it falls on... I am always glad that mine is in June---not around too many things--and the weather is usually nice, so people want to party!
And I NEVER watch the Super Bowl---don't think that I have EVER seen one...hmmmm, what does that say about me?
Wow! Lynne...we were writing at the same time---that is so cool! I feel so close to you! heh, heh
I can totally relate - my birthday's tomorrow and falls on Super Bowl Sunday sometimes, too!
Hope you had a good birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! OK, so I'm late. What's new? LOL! One of my "kids" has a birthday on Christmas Eve. Another has it on Valentines day. Talk about getting annually ripped off!
Glad you finally got flowers. You deserve a whole garden of them!
